An Eye For An Eye: Vertebrates and octopuses developed the eye independently. In the vertebrate version the nerve fibers pass in front of the retina, creating a blind spot where the nerves pass through the retina. The octopus eye is constructed the right way, with the nerves attached to the rear of the retina. This means that the octopus does not have a blind spot, but humans do.
