Humans seem to need the comfort blanket of God & religion when faced with the existential reality of how the universe really is. Its like being faced with deep water when you cannot see the bottom, or the fact that space is just completely endless. These things are so vast they scare the crap out of us, we cannot face them as they are. So we create comfort blankets to make them safe for us.
