Jed King 2013 |
"I hold that, the idea of God is the greatest con trick we ever perpetrated on ourselves and that religion exclusively the very pinnacle of human folly. Both the barbarism of history and the horrors of today committed in the name of monotheism, show that religion stands alone as the most virulent and pernicious cancer ever to threaten the peace and harmony of our world". JK. 2000. |

Theology does not thrive in the world of action and reaction, change: it grows on calm, like the scum on a stagnant pool. And it flourishes, it prospers, on decline. Only in a world where everything is patently being lost can a priest stir men's hearts as a poet would by maintaining that nothing is in vain. • John Gardner, Grendel |

Some advice:
It's a waste of time debating ideologues--especially the religious kind. The only facts they recognize--no matter how fictitious--are the facts that support and sanctify their ideology. Thus the inevitable result: they're right and you're wrong no matter what the experts, the scientists, pollsters, the pundits, and even the gods themselves might say. |

For most Christians. . . . it was last Sunday." |

The irony of religion is that because of its power to divert man to destructive courses, the world could actually come to an end. The plain fact is, religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge having in key decisions made by religious people, by irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. George Bush prayed a lot about Iraq, but he didn't learn a lot about it. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It's nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slave holders, keeping mankind in a bondage of fantacy and nonsense that had spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do. most people would think it's wonderful when someone says, I'm willing, Lord! I'll do whatever you want me to do. Except that since there are no gods actually talking to us, this void is filled in by people with their own corruptions and limitations and agendas. And anyone who tells you they know, they just know what happens when you die, I promise you, you don't. How can I be sure? Because I don't know, and you do not posses mental powers that I do not. The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble, and that's what man needs to be, considering that human history is just a litany of getting shit dead wrong. This is why rational people, anti-religionists, must end their timidity and come out of the closet and assert themselves. And those who consider themselves only moderately religious really need to look in the mirror and realize that the solace and comfort that religion brings you comes at a terrible price. If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you'd resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a mafia wife, for the true devils of extremism that draw their legitimacy from the billions of their fellow travelers. If the world does come to an end here or wherever, or if it limps into the future, decimated by the effects of Religion-inspired nuclear terrorism, lets remember what the real problem was.We learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it. That's it. Grow up or die.
Bill Maher. |

"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistant that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind; and, for my part, I sincerely detest it, as I detest everything that is cruel." [Thomas Paine, _The Age of Reason_]

Gregarious |
As I look around the world, I see scientists and rationalists like me … we’re always going around asking ourselves, ‘What if I’m wrong’? And, sometimes, scientists are proven wrong, as new discoveries are made, and they have to revise or discard a theory. You don’t see many among the religious crowd asking that question. They don’t seem to be very interested in asking themselves, ‘What if we’re wrong’? ... Religion makes people inflexible, unchangeable, rigid, fanatical, dogmatic and blinded by their faith. They become brainwashed and indoctrinated and deliberately choose to remain ignorant about reason, logic, sagacity, sense, and reality. In a sense, they are rationally, emotionally and intellectually removed from the real world. This question should be especially relevant and appropriate for them since they have no proof nor evidence to validate their beliefs. And, these beliefs and convictions become increasingly harder to rationalize, explain and justify as new scientific discoveries and pieces of evidence come to light. … Daniel Dennett.

The importance of doubt is crucial because if you’re ‘certain’ that you’re right and other people are wrong, you’re not going to be able to hear and receive evidence that contradicts you – because of the power of “confirmation biasâ€. This is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's pre-existing and established beliefs or hypotheses. We are designed to protect, defend and “justify†those ideas that we have enshrined into our worldview. That’s why it’s so important to talk about these ideas with kindness and compassion and to understand that even when people deeply disagree with each other, generally it’s not coming from a place of ill will, … Richard Feynman. |

In the way that skepticism is sometimes applied to issues of public concern, there is a tendency to belittle, to condescend, to ignore the fact that, deluded or not, supporters of superstition, myths, pseudoscience, fantasy, and delusion are human beings with feelings, who, like the skeptics, are trying to figure out how the world works and what our role in it might be. Their motives are in many cases consonant with science. If their culture, ethos, intellect or values have not given them all the tools they need to pursue this great quest, let us temper our criticism and reproach with kindness. None of us comes fully equipped. … Carl Sagan.

I promise you, it doesn’t matter what you believe, how strongly you live your beliefs, or how true your beliefs are, somebody else, somewhere, thinks you are wrong and delusional; somebody else, somewhere, thinks your faith and beliefs are senseless, absurd, illogical and irrational. In fact, there are billions of others who do. … Dan Pearce. |

Gregarious |
Faith and beliefs and religious convictions are in reality a cover-up for insecurity, ignorance, hope, fear, and uncertainty: 1. You need faith only for the things you do not know – not for the things you know for sure; for things you want to be true; things for which you try to twist the facts to fit your desired outcome; things for which you only believe or trust or hope or assume are true – mostly based on what others tell you rather than your own objective and unbiased investigation. 2. You need faith for things for which there is no proof nor evidence and that lack scientific authentication. These are dubious, doubtful, hopeful, ambiguous and uncertain beliefs. More to the point … they are fictional, imaginary, delusional, and harmful beliefs. This category includes supernatural, mystical, paranormal, superstitious, spiritual, mythological, religious, ghostly, fairytale, fabled, magical, divine, psychic, prophetic, fortune-telling, and astrological beliefs. 3. You are secure and certain only in what you know – not pretend to know – the existence of which can be confirmed by scientific verification, proof, and evidence. If not, you need faith to ignore all the prevailing facts and evidence – and still believe otherwise! … Greg Taylor.

Gregarious |
Facts, like living things, have intrinsic value in and of themselves and demand respect. Yet some people use them as a means to an end and dismiss them as soon as they are done using them. For some delusional others, facts are irrelevant and should be ignored because they cloud their preconceived notions and beliefs. |
|
Gregarious |
You can have your own opinions, convictions, feelings, and beliefs … but you cannot have your own facts! |
|
Gregarious |
Where there are facts and evidence, no one speaks of 'faith'. We do not speak of faith that 2 + 2 = 4, or that the earth is “round†and revolves around the sun, or that evolution is real, or that gravity exists. These are indisputable facts. We only speak of faith when we wish to substitute emotions, hope, feelings, opinions, convictions, fanaticism, dogma, and beliefs for facts, proofs, evidence, and reality. … Bertrand Russell. |
|
Gregarious |
Truth does not demand belief nor faith; it asks to be tested. Scientists do not join hands every Sunday morning, singing, 'yes, gravity is real! I will have faith! I will be strong! I believe in my heart that what goes up must come down. Amen!' If they did, we would think they were pretty insecure and doubtful about the concept. … Dan Barker. |

EA Miller |
I can say with absolute certainty that a fictional god will NEVER be able to provide a single one of my needs no matter how powerful people claim it is in their holy fairy-tale book. |
