Theists are a picnic short of a sandwich.
Robert Green Ingersoll The agnostic does not simply say, "l do not know." He goes another step, and he says, with great emphasis, that you do not know. He insists that you are trading on the ignorance of others, and on the fear of others. He is not satisfied with saying that you do not know, -- he demonstrates that you do not know, and he drives you from the field of fact -- he drives you from the realm of reason -- he drives you from the light, into the darkness of conjecture -- into the world of dreams and shadows, and he compels you to say, at last, that your faith has no foundation in fact.
Robert Green Ingersoll We have already compared the benefits of theology and science. When the theologian governed the world, it was covered with huts and hovels for the many, palaces and cathedrals for the few. To nearly all the children of men, reading and writing were unknown arts. The poor were clad in rags and skins -- they devoured crusts, and gnawed bones. The day of Science dawned, and the luxuries of a century ago are the necessities of to-day. Men in the middle ranks of life have more of the conveniences and elegancies than the princes and kings of the theological times. But above and over all this, is the development of mind. There is more of value in the brain of an average man of to-day -- of a master-mechanic, of a chemist, of a naturalist, of an inventor, than there was in the brain of the world four hundred years ago.
These blessings did not fall from the skies. These benefits did not drop from the outstretched hands of priests. They were not found in cathedrals or behind altars -- neither were they searched for with holy candles. They were not discovered by the closed eyes of prayer, nor did they come in answer to superstitious supplication. They are the children of freedom, the gifts of reason, observation and experience -- and for them all, man is indebted to man.
NoGods4Me Christians ask why moderate Muslims can't stop the extremists in their ranks from terrorizing women with sharia law. Yet they think nothing of voting the "Christian Taliban" into political office in the US. WTF!
Robert Green Ingersoll A fact never went into partnership with a miracle. Truth scorns the assistance of wonders. A fact will fit every other fact in the universe, and that is how you can tell whether it is or is not a fact. A lie will not fit anything except another lie.
Robert Green Ingersoll Religion can never reform mankind because religion is slavery.

Crikey, we're get a little off beam here, discussing science.

Yes, the Earth's gravity depends on the MASS of the Earth. The MASS is at it's optimum at the point furthest from the centre of the Earth )the thickest point). Thus a suspended "plumb line" will settle at a point directly pointing to the centre of the Earth/MASS.

Notes:

1) Two high plumbed pillars set a good distance apart will never be vertically parallel.

2) Three high plumbed in line pillars set good distances apart will never be vertically parallel.

3) If you put a datum/level mark on the face of each of those pillars using a water-level the marks will not be precisely optically in line. The centre one will appear to be higher due to the gravitational effect on the water in the tube.

4) This effect can be checked and measured using an optical instrument like a laser beam or theodolite., etc.

Next week: How to build an ark capable of holding at least two of everything living on Earth for a month or so at sea. How to feed the lot of 'em and get rid of their waste products. How to stop the buggers from killing and eating each other. And how to repopulate the world with sane people and healthy animals despite the inherent dangers of crossbreeding.
Dbunker Religion always repeats the same three-step process whenever confronted by a threatening scientific discovery: First, they try to crush the "heretical" view, often through censorship and persecution of the scientist. Then the evidence supporting the scientific viewpoint inevitably grows, so they struggle to find a compromise position that incorporates both viewpoints. Finally when the scientific victory is complete they're left to indulge in apologetics, a field of study that explains away and defends their actions. In this stage, it is common for apologists to claim that there is not, and never was, any conflict between religion and science. This process has occurred like clockwork down through history.
Dbunk "The level depends on gravitational force on earth from the center of the earth" the Earth's gravitational force does not come "from the center of the earth", the Earth's magnetic field does. The Earth's gravity comes from the mass of the entire earth itself
Unknown I was once asked by a religious man, if it bothered me that nothing happened when I died. At that point I told him, "Not at all, just remember nothing happens when you die either.. I'm just honest about it."

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know. D Rumsfeld.
Unknown SO, here is the thing with religion: people tend to give a proper name to things they own or even know about it for a long time like for example: if I meet a dog I may call him/her Dog for a while, but after a long period of time I may call him/her Sam. Here is an old guy that people have spoken with for centuries but they still call him God; god is not a name just like I cant name my dog Dog or my friends Friend. There are like a thousand of Gods in all history of human kind so whick specific God are you talking to... Maybe I should call my cat Cat and name my child Child.

Steve Fradkin Steve Fradkin '"At a news conference in Chicago on August 27, 1987 (not 1988 as has been reported elsewhere), which I covered as a fully credentialed journalist, I asked Vice President Bush several questions. In response to one question, Bush said, "I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God."'
Rob Sherman

This is actually borderline scary. Closed minded father and son in charge of the most "powerful country in the world." …. scary.
Steve Fradkin Steve Fradkin When asked if the English language should be the official language of the United States of America, G.W. Bush replied, "If English is good enough for the holy bible (lower case definitely mine), it's good enough for me."

Impact frustration of the origin of life, By Kevin A. Maher & David J. Stevenson

Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125, USA

One possible definition for the origin of life on Earth is the time at which the interval between devastating environmental insults by impact exceeded the timescale for establishing self-replicating proto-organisms.

A quantitative relationship for the Hadean (pre-3,800 Myr ago) and Early Archean (3,800 to 3,400 Myr) impact flux can be derived from the lunar and terrestrial impact records. Also, the effects of impact-related processes on the various environments proposed for abiogenesis (the development of life through chemical evolution from inorganic materials) can be estimated.

Using a range of plausible values for the timescale for abiogenesis, the interval in time when life might first have bootstrapped itself into existence can be found for each environment. We find that if the deep marine hydrothermal setting provided a suitable site, abiogenesis could have happened as early as 4,000 to 4,200 Myr ago, whereas at the surface of the Earth abiogenesis could have occurred between 3,700 and 4,000 Myr. END.

As I've said before, TIME and variable conditions would've eventually led to the sparking of life on Earth. Can you honestly imagine this NOT happening on a world with all the basic ingredients and all the TIME and conditions available?
Stephen Harris "Only the atheist realizes how morally objectionable it is for survivors of a catastrophe to believe themselves spared by a loving God (caps not mine) while this same God (ibid) drowned babies in their cribs."

Religion is a cancer, and just like many cancers there is no cure.

On the subject of cancer.

Many $BILLIONS have been - and still are - being spent on finding cures for bodily cancers, and yet not ONE dollar has been spent on finding a cure for the cancer of religion.

Yet religion, just like cancer, has been - and still is being - responsible for MILLIONS of deaths.
EA Miller EA Miller Mixed messages, repetition, bad fact checking, awkward constructions, inconsistent voice, weak character development, boring tangents, contradictions, passages where nobody can tell what the heck the writer meant to convey. . . . This doesn't sound like a book that was dictated by a deity.
